International Polar Year (IPY) Education and Outreach Subcommittee meeting
The IPF was represented by Mark McCaffrey and Jean de Pomereu at the IPY Education & Outreach Subcommittee meeting at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven on 19-21 October 2006.
Among the subjects discussed where:
- IPY media strategy, IPY branding
- communication between IPY international and national activities
- national and international launch events
- IPY.org website and support for IPY participants
Mark McCaffrey was assigned to the Education Working Group and Jean de Pomereu to the Media Working Group. The IPF was once again complimented for its work on the architecture, functionalities and technical guidelines for the soon to be relaunched IPY.org website
It was decided that the IPY international launch will take place at the Senat in Paris on 1 March 2007 and would co-hosted by ICSU and WMO.
In parallel, as and when is appropriate, the IPF will also dispatch press releases through its SciencePoles website, as well as the linked media database which it is in the process of developing.
The IPY will encourage the widest possible possible distribution of IPY information and materials. In addition to this, a closed website will be established whereby 'IPY Ambassadors' can share presentations and other communication materials for public outreach. In regards to branding, the IPY logo will be free to use by members of endorsed IPY projects, participating organizations, national IPY committees and activities, and people involved in activities registered with the IPY International Programme Office.
