IPF is currently working on many different projects and is also organising a few events. This section will give you the most up-to-date information on each of them.

    The journey began in 2004: the International Polar Foundation, commissioned by the Belgian Federal Government, set out to build a new research station in Antarctica which would become a platform for international polar science.

    To celebrate the International Polar year 2007-2008, Alain Hubert and Dixie Dansercoer attempted a traverse from Siberia to Greenland on skis. As part of their journey, they participated in a full educational programme. They also undertook a range of scientific studies and took measurements and samplings under the guise of several polar research institutes.

  • The Polarstern

    Polarstern 2006 / CAML expedition: Antarctic biodiversity

    As a prelude to the International Polar Year, from the end of November 2006 to February 2007, the IPF will send its scientific liaison officer to Antarctica. On board "Polarstern", the Alfred Wegener Institute's main research vessel, Gauthier Chapelle will cover the research undertaken during this expedition.

    A mobile exhibition for DAMOCLES

    The DAMOCLES (Developing Arctic Modeling and Observing Capabilities for Long-term Environmental Studies) project is an integrated ice-atmosphere-ocean monitoring and forecasting system designed for observing, understanding and quantifying climate change in the Arctic. An advanced observing system will be developed and deployed, providing for the first time, synoptic, continuous and long-term monitoring of the lower atmosphere, sea ice and upper ocean.

    The overall objective of IPY-CARE (International Polar Year - Climate of the Arctic and its Role for Europe) is to create, co-ordinate and prepare a Pan-European science and implementation plan for an Arctic climate change and ecosystems research programme as contribution to the International Polar Year.
