IPF Welcomes Two New Board Members: Natacha Lippens and Michael Saverys

Brussels, October 26, 2023 - Natacha Lippens and Michael Saverys have joined the Board of Directors of the International Polar Foundation (IPF).

Natacha Lippens

With a background in biology, zoology, and ecology, and experience on boards of organisations, not to mention a strong passion for science and sustainability, Natacha Lippens is a welcome addition to the foundation’s board.

Natacha obtained her bachelor’s degree with honours in zoology from the University of Edinburgh. She then obtained a Master of Science (MSc) degree in environmental technology, with a specialisation in ecological management at Imperial College London, focusing on the intersection of technology, innovation, and sustainability. She also obtained a dual degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA) from both INSEAD, one of the world's leading business schools, and Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

Natacha has had a multidisciplinary career working as a scientist, businesswoman, and consultant. She has worked as a marine biologist in the field of pollution prevention and control, advising on clean-up and supporting the clean-up of marine pollution incidents worldwide.

She sits on numerous boards of directors and advisory boards in Belgium and abroad. She is also actively involved in several impact investment funds and ventures.

She is passionate about sustainability and education, and believes that boards have a strategic role to play in the climate transition.

“As a biologist having lived abroad for 22 years, I am particularly happy to be joining the board of such an internationally renowned Belgian institution as the International Polar Foundation, notably working with the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica, which is a symbol of endurance, vision, European innovation, and of international cooperation in scientific research,” declared Natacha. “I am very much looking forward to working with my fellow directors on the important topics of enabling polar science as well as promoting Belgian technology and the sciences.”

In addition to serving on the board of directors of the International Polar Foundation, Natacha is also currently:

Chair of Climate Governance asbl/vzw Chapter Zero Brussels, an organisation that aims to help board directors across Belgium and the European Union to become climate-competent and address the challenges of climate change;
Member of the Investment and Sustainability Committees of Estari Sustainable Growth Fund;
On the board of Futerro, a company that produces bio-sourced biodegradable and recyclable plastic;
On the advisory board of Confluence Investors, an impact fund focused on publicity listed companies in the non-BRIC/ smaller emerging markets;
On the advisory board of Spencer Stuart, an executive search and leadership consulting firm;
On the board of Finasucre Group, a family-owned company that produces and distributes sugar and related products;
On the board of Compagnie Het Zoute, real- estate developer in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France;
On the board of Iscal Sugar S.A, a company producing sugar and specialties from sugar beets;
Consultant at Telos Impact, an independent manager and advisor for organisations, individuals, and public institutions seeking to grow their sustainability;
On the advisory board of Coast 4C, an enterprise driving ocean and climate restoration through inclusive value chains for regenerative seaweed.

Michael Saverys

Michael Saverys brings not only years of experience as a businessman to the board of the foundation, but also a passion for taking action to find sustainable solutions to address the issue of climate change.

He is currently Commercial Director at CMB Group, which is specialised in international shipping. He follows his father Marc Saverys, who was a member of the Strategic Council of the Polar Secretariat.

Michael studied business administration at UBI in Brussels before starting his career in trading grains at Noble Group in 2005. In 2007 he was headhunted by Merril Lynch and worked for them as dry freight commodity trader until 2009. Following this, he joined CMB Group as Commercial Director for their dry bulk division, Bocimar.

“I’m very excited to be part of the foundation’s board of directors,” Michael explained.

“And like Alain Hubert, I’m someone who doesn’t just talk about addressing climate change; I also like doing something about it,” he continued. “I’m very excited to be part of a foundation that not only talks the talk but walks the walk.”

CMB Group is the biggest energy transition player in the shipping industry. The company is currently developing hydrogen and ammonia solutions to greatly reduce the carbon footprint of not only the shipping industry but also the mining and trucking industries.

“I think CMB Group can learn a lot from what IPF is doing in Antarctica. But IPF in turn can learn from our activities at CMB Group,” Michael added. “I’m excited to see what we can accomplish.”

The International Polar Foundation (IPF):

The IPF is a private law foundation with a public service mandate. It was set up in 2002 by Alain Hubert, the leading climate scientist André Berger, and the glaciologist Hugo Decleir. Its remit is to support international polar scientific research and to disseminate the important findings to the public and decision-makers.

The IPF was behind the creation of the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica station, which was officially inaugurated in 2007 as the first zero-emissions station. PEA re-established a Belgian presence in Antarctica at the service of science and concerned citizens increasingly facing climate and environmental challenges. Every year, the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica station hosts scientists from all over the World.

L'IPF accueille deux nouveaux membres au sein de son conseil d'administration : Natacha Lippens et Michael Saverys

Bruxelles, le 23 octobre 2023. La Fondation Polaire Internationale est heureuse d'annoncer que Natacha Lippens et Michael Saverys ont rejoint son conseil d'administration ce mois-ci.

Natacha Lippens

Avec un bagage en biologie, zoologie et écologie, ainsi qu'une expérience au sein de conseils d'administration d'organisations, et une forte passion pour la science et la durabilité, Natacha Lippens est un atout précieux pour le conseil de la fondation.

Mme Lippens a obtenu son diplôme de bachelier avec mention en zoologie à l'Université d'Édimbourg. Elle a ensuite obtenu un Master of Science (MSc) en technologie environnementale, avec une spécialisation en gestion écologique à l'Imperial College de Londres, où elle s’est concentrée sur l'intersection entre la technologie, l’innovation et la durabilité. Elle détient également un double diplôme de Master en administration des affaires (MBA) de l'INSEAD, l'une des principales écoles de commerce mondiales, et de l'Université Tsinghua à Pékin, en Chine.

Mme Lippens a une carrière multidisciplinaire, travaillant en tant que scientifique, femme d'affaires et consultante. Elle a travaillé en tant que biologiste marine dans le domaine de la prévention et du contrôle de la pollution, conseillant le nettoyage des incidents de pollution marine dans le monde entier.

Elle siège dans de nombreux conseils d'administration et comités consultatifs en Belgique et à l'étranger. Elle est également activement impliquée dans plusieurs fonds d'investissement à impact et entreprises.

Elle est passionnée par la durabilité et l'éducation, et est convaincue que les conseils d'administration ont un rôle stratégique à jouer dans la transition climatique.

"En tant que biologiste ayant vécu à l'étranger pendant 22 ans, je suis particulièrement heureuse de rejoindre le conseil d'administration d'une institution belge de renommée internationale telle que la Fondation Polaire Internationale, notamment en travaillant avec la station Princesse Elisabeth Antarctica, qui est un symbole d'endurance, de vision, d'innovation européenne et de coopération internationale dans la recherche scientifique", a déclaré Natacha. "Je suis impatiente de travailler avec mes collègues administrateurs sur des sujets aussi importants que la promotion de la science polaire et de la technologie belge."

Michael Saverys

Michael Saverys met à contribution son expérience d'entrepreneur au sein du conseil de la fondation. Il apporte également une passion qui le pousse à chercher activement des solutions durables pour aborder la problématique du changement climatique.

Actuellement directeur commercial au sein du groupe CMB, spécialisé dans le transport maritime international, il suit les traces de son père, Marc Saverys, qui a fait partie du Conseil Stratégique du Secrétariat Polaire durant de nombreuses années.

Michael a étudié l'administration des affaires à l'UBI à Bruxelles avant de débuter sa carrière dans le commerce de céréales chez Noble Group en 2005. En 2007, il a été recruté par Merril Lynch et a travaillé pour eux en tant que négociateur de matières premières sèches jusqu'en 2009. Par la suite, il rejoint le groupe CMB en tant que directeur commercial de leur division de vrac sec, Bocimar.

"Je suis très heureux de rejoindre le conseil d'administration de la fondation", a partagé Michael.

"Et tout comme Alain Hubert, je ne fais pas que parler de la lutte contre le changement climatique ; j'aime aussi agir pour celle-ci", a-t-il ajouté. "Je suis très enthousiaste à l'idée de faire partie d'une fondation qui ne se contente pas de paroles, mais qui passe à l'action."

CMB Group se positionne comme le principal acteur de la transition énergétique dans l'industrie maritime. L'entreprise développe actuellement des solutions à base d'hydrogène et d'ammoniac pour réduire considérablement l'empreinte carbone non seulement de l'industrie maritime, mais aussi de l'industrie minière et du transport routier.

"Je pense que le groupe CMB peut beaucoup apprendre de ce que fait l'IPF en Antarctique. Et inversement, l'IPF peut s'inspirer de nos activités au sein du groupe CMB", a ajouté Michael. "Je suis enthousiaste à l'idée de voir ce que nous pouvons accomplir."

La Fondation Polaire Internationale (IPF) :

L’IPF est une fondation d’utilité publique créée en 2002 par Alain Hubert et le climatologue renommé André Berger et le glaciologue Hugo Decleir. La fondation a comme mission le soutien de la recherche scientifique polaire internationale et la dissémination d’importantes découvertes au grand public et décideurs.

IPF Verwelkomt Twee Nieuwe Bestuursleden: Natacha Lippens en Michael Saverys

Brussel, 23 october 2023. Met veel enthousiasme kondigt de International Polar Foundation aan dat Natacha Lippens en Michael Saverys deze maand zijn toegetreden tot de raad van bestuur.

Met een achtergrond in biologie, zoölogie en ecologie, en ervaring in besturen van organisaties, en niet te vergeten een sterke passie voor wetenschap en duurzaamheid, is Natacha Lippens een waardevolle aanwinst voor de raad van bestuur van de stichting.

Natacha behaalde haar bachelor diploma met onderscheiding in de zoölogie aan de Universiteit van Edinburgh. Vervolgens behaalde ze een Master of Science (MSc) in milieutechnologie, met een specialisatie in ecologisch beheer aan het Imperial College London, met een focus op de intersectie van technologie, innovatie en duurzaamheid. Ze behaalde ook een diploma van een duale opleiding van Master of Business Administration (MBA) zowel aan INSEAD, een van 's werelds toonaangevende business schools, als aan de Tsinghua University in Beijing, China.

Natacha heeft een veelzijdige carrière en werkt als wetenschapper, zakenvrouw en consultant. Ze heeft gewerkt als marien bioloog op het gebied van preventie en controle van vervuiling, waarbij ze wereldwijd advies heeft gegeven over de opruiming van mariene vervuilingsincidenten.

Ze zit in tal van raden van bestuur en adviesraden in België en daarbuiten. Ze is ook actief betrokken bij verschillende impact investing fondsen en ondernemingen.

Ze is gepassioneerd over duurzaamheid en onderwijs, en gelooft dat raden van bestuur een strategische rol te vervullen hebben in de klimaattransitie.

"Als bioloog die 22 jaar in het buitenland heeft gewoond, ben ik bijzonder blij om me aan te sluiten bij het bestuur van zo'n internationaal gerenommeerde Belgische instelling als de International Polar Foundation, onder meer in samenwerking met de Princess Elisabeth Antarctica, wat een symbool is van uithoudingsvermogen, visie, Europese innovatie en internationale samenwerking in wetenschappelijk onderzoek," verklaarde Natacha. "Ik kijk er erg naar uit om samen met mijn medebestuurders te werken aan de belangrijke onderwerpen van het mogelijk maken van poolwetenschap en het bevorderen van de Belgische technologie en wetenschap."

Michael Saverys

Michael Saverys brengt niet alleen jarenlange ervaring als zakenman mee naar het bestuur van de stichting, maar ook een passie om actie te ondernemen om duurzame oplossingen te vinden voor het aanpakken van het probleem van klimaatverandering.

Hij is momenteel commercieel directeur van de CMB Group, die gespecialiseerd is in internationaal maritiem transport, en treedt in de voetsporen van zijn vader, Marc Saverys, die jarenlang lid was van de strategische raad van het Poolsecretariaat.

Michael studeerde bedrijfskunde aan UBI in Brussel voordat hij zijn carrière begon in de handel in granen bij Noble Group in 2005. In 2007 werd hij benaderd door Merril Lynch en werkte hij voor hen als handelaar in droge vrachtgoederen tot 2009. Daarna trad hij in dienst bij CMB Group als commercieel directeur voor hun droge bulk divisie, Bocimar.

"Ik ben erg enthousiast om deel uit te maken van het bestuur van de stichting," legde Michael uit.

"En net als Alain Hubert ben ik iemand die niet alleen praat over het aanpakken van klimaatverandering; ik vind het ook leuk om er iets aan te doen," vervolgde hij. "Ik kijk er erg naar uit om deel uit te maken van een stichting die niet alleen praat, maar ook handelt."

CMB Group is de grootste speler in de energietransitie in de scheepvaartindustrie. Het bedrijf ontwikkelt momenteel oplossingen op het gebied van waterstof en ammoniak om de koolstofvoetafdruk van niet alleen de scheepvaartindustrie, maar ook de mijnbouw- en vrachtwagenindustrie aanzienlijk te verminderen.

"Ik denk dat CMB Group veel kan leren van wat IPF doet in Antarctica. Maar IPF op zijn beurt kan leren van onze activiteiten bij CMB Group," voegde Michael toe. "Ik kijk ernaar uit te zien wat we kunnen bereiken."

De International Polar Foundation (IPF):

De IPF is een privaatrechtelijke stichting van openbaar nut. De stichting werd in 2002 opgericht door Alain Hubert en toonaangevende klimaatwetenschapper André Berger en de glacioloog Hugo Decleir. De missie van IPF bestaat erin internationaal poolwetenschappelijk onderzoek te steunen en belangrijke bevindingen te verspreiden onder het publiek en besluitvormers.

De stichting ligt ook aan de basis van het Princess Elisabeth Antarctica-station dat in 2007 werd ingehuldigd als het eerste en tot op heden enige "zero emissie"-station, met het oog op het behoud van de Belgische aanwezigheid op Antarctica ten dienste van burgers die steeds meer worden geconfronteerd met klimaat- en milieu-uitdagingen. Het Belgische Princess Elisabeth-station Antarctica verwelkomt jaarlijks vele wetenschappers van alle nationaliteiten.
