Starting on Monday, March 23rd, viewers can watch an extended five-part television version of the Bargones documentary, 2050.
Released in Belgian cinemas last year as a nearly two-hour film following avant-première screenings at the 2025 Filmfestival Oostende and Kinepolis Antwerp, filmmakers Eric Goens and Kristof Van Den Bergh are releasing an extended five-part television version of their memorable documentary on Belgian broadcaster VRT.
The series follows a group of dedicated climate scientists living and working in Antarctica as they investigate the consequences of rapidly melting ice sheets and rising sea levels. Their struggles against harsh conditions, bureaucratic hurdles, and the growing despair that the world is ignoring their warnings are documented throughout the series.
Through intimate interviews, breathtaking footage, and inconvenient facts, the series confronts viewers with the grim reality of climate change. It is not only a call to action but also a tribute to the brave men and women dedicating their lives to conducting research on the future of our planet in the harshest environments on the planet.
2050 is a compelling documentary series about the climate, in which polar explorer and researcher Alain Hubert, glaciologist Eric Rignot, and climate scientist Simon Steffen show how the southernmost continent in the world plays a crucial role as the ultimate barometer of the health of our planet.
The filmmakers travel along with Alain Hubert and his international team, including Rignot, during their months-long stay in Antarctica, the engine room of our climate. For five episodes, the viewer witnesses new insights and receives answers to every possible question. We are present in the NASA control rooms in Los Angeles, have a front-row seat at the launch of the NISAR satellite in India, witness the island's years-long decline in Greenland, and descend into the deepest ice caverns during a weeks-long stay at the Princess Elisabeth Station in Antarctica, braving real snowstorms.
2050 reveals the fragility of the polar regions, the power of human determination, and the urgent need to act now to meet our 2050 climate targets. If we do nothing by 2050, sea levels will inevitably rise. The series is a sobering story, but at the same time it offers a human and understandable message of hope, because we are the first generation that knows how to turn the tide as long as we act.
The most important question is will we be able to make real change before it’s too late?
