The Princess Elisabeth Antarctica research base has just expanded its solar installation with 44 new Bisol panels, closing the ring around the station and boosting its zero-emission mission even further.
Belgium’s Princess Elisabeth Antarctica Station — the world’s first zero-emission polar research outpost — continues to lead in sustainable power. In the latest upgrade, the station’s technical team installed 44 additional 380 Wp solar panels, completing a full 360° ring of photovoltaics designed to maximize exposure during 24-hour daylight. This enhancement strengthens the station’s capacity to harness solar energy under extreme conditions. Originally powered by a hybrid of solar (PV and thermal), wind turbines, and battery storage, the base now moves closer to full energy autonomy even in one of Earth’s harshest environments.
