The workshop will bring together graduate and PhD students along with key experts to explore the fundamental uncertainties shaping Arctic development from climate change to emerging technologies to shifting geopolitics. Using scenarios methodology, participants will develop and debate possible futures for investments in the European Arctic up to 2040.

Beyond its natural resource wealth, the Arctic is increasingly recognized as a testing ground for global transitions. Melting sea ice is reshaping maritime routes, shortening distances between Europe and Asia and potentially redefining the geography of trade. At the same time, the fragile ecosystems and the livelihoods of Arctic communities are under unprecedented pressure. 

Balancing these opportunities and risks raises urgent questions: will Arctic resources fuel new geopolitical rivalries, or can they inspire innovative models of cooperation and sustainability? The workshop will confront these dilemmas directly, inviting participants to consider not only economic scenarios but also the role of indigenous knowledge systems, environmental safeguards, and the circular economy in shaping the region’s future.

The workshop aims to:

• Raise awareness of challenges and opportunities for sustainable development in the European Arctic
• Provide hands-on training in scenario-based strategic analysis
• Foster interdisciplinary dialogue on Arctic futures

The results of the workshop will feed directly into the symposium’s second panel discussion on Artic investments, helping to frame strategic debates with insights co-created by students and experts alike.

Students from European universities are invited to apply. A group of 15-20 students from different academic disciplines will be selected to take part in the workshop. Students from both the social and natural sciences are welcome.
