SEISMO

Monitoring earthquakes, glacier movement and Earth's crust in East Antarctica through continuous seismic observations.

SEISMO is one of the longest-running scientific projects at Princess Elisabeth Antarctica. Led by the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB), the project continuously monitors seismic activity in East Antarctica to improve our understanding of both the Earth's lithosphere and the dynamic Antarctic ice sheet.

At the heart of the project is a surface seismometer installed in the GEOS scientific shelter on Utsteinen Ridge, close to Princess Elisabeth Antarctica, together with a continuously operating Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) antenna (see pictures below). These instruments record seismic signals generated by earthquakes occurring around the world, as well as much smaller vibrations known as icequakes, which are produced by the movement and deformation of glaciers and ice.

By combining these continuous observations, SEISMO provides valuable information about the geological structure beneath Antarctica and the behaviour of its ice masses. The seismic data help scientists investigate tectonic processes, monitor glacier dynamics and better understand the interactions between the Earth's crust and the Antarctic ice sheet.

Operating year-round in one of the most remote regions on Earth, SEISMO contributes to long-term international geophysical research. Its continuous observations provide an important dataset for studying seismic activity, glacier movement and the changing Antarctic environment.
