The 4SAT project is a site assessment initiative led by the Belgian Space Agency to evaluate the feasibility of installing a Space Situational Awareness (SSA) telescope near Princess Elisabeth Antarctica. Such a telescope would monitor satellites and other objects orbiting Earth, contributing to the safe and sustainable use of space.

The project focuses on identifying the most suitable location by assessing the environmental and astronomical conditions around the research station. This includes analysing long-term weather observations, evaluating potential installation sites and studying the quality of the night sky for astronomical observations.

Antarctica offers unique advantages for astronomical observations, including low atmospheric pollution and exceptionally clear skies. By combining meteorological data, site mapping and astronomical measurements, the project aims to determine whether the region can host a permanent telescope capable of supporting future space surveillance activities.

The results of the site survey will provide the scientific and technical foundation for future decisions regarding the installation of a Space Situational Awareness telescope in East Antarctica, contributing to international efforts to monitor the increasingly busy space environment.
