AEROCLOUD

AEROCLOUD builds a database of cloud, precipitation and aerosol properties in Antarctica to improve climate models and understand atmospheric processes in East Antarctica.

The AEROCLOUD project is a collaboration between KU Leuven, the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (RMI/IRM/KMI) and the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy (BIRA-IASB). The project aims to collect long-term measurements of cloud, precipitation and aerosol characteristics at Princess Elisabeth Antarctica.

The collected data are used to evaluate and improve regional climate models for Queen Maud Land and to better understand the relationship between atmospheric aerosols, cloud formation and the surface energy balance in East Antarctica. Several instruments operate autonomously to collect atmospheric data, including during the winter period when the station is unoccupied. During the 2018-2019 season, BELARE teams supported the maintenance of equipment used to measure cloud temperature and aerosol properties.
