Beyond EPICA

An international ice-core drilling project aiming to retrieve the oldest Antarctic ice record to better understand Earth’s climate history.

The Beyond EPICA project brings together an international group of researchers aiming to drill an ice core at Dome Fuji on the Antarctic Plateau. Scientists believe that the ice at this location may contain a record extending back at least 1.5 million years.

By studying this ancient ice, researchers aim to improve understanding of Antarctica’s climate history and past changes in the Earth’s climate system. During their expeditions, the research team used the Princess Elisabeth Antarctica as a logistical stop while travelling to and from Dome Fuji.

The International Polar Foundation (IPF), the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), and the House of Sustainability at the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce will convene the first Antarctic Futures Symposium on April 23rd - 24th, 2026 at the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce. It will mark a significant milestone in the development of the IPF’s next ambitious flagship initiative: the establishment of the Andromeda Earth Observatory in East Antarctica.
