BioFe

BioFe in Glacial Systems investigates how bio-available iron and nutrients are transported from the Antarctic interior to the coast, where they can support marine primary producers such as phytoplankton.

The BioFe in Glacial Systems project, led by Dr Kate Winter from Northumbria University (UK), aims to improve understanding of how material transported by the Antarctic Ice Sheet contributes to nutrient availability in the Southern Ocean. In particular, the project studies how bio-available iron contained in glacial sediments reaches coastal areas, where it can act as a nutrient for phytoplankton and other primary producers.

During the field campaigns, Dr Winter collected data using ice-penetrating radar to investigate the topography of the glacier-bedrock interface and improve knowledge of the subglacial environment. She also collected drone images of rocky outcrops to monitor changes in sediment movement over time. In addition, seismic data from Raspberry Shake seismographs installed with IPF support were collected to study seismic activity related to falling debris. These observations contribute to a better understanding of sediment transport and nutrient pathways within Antarctic glacial systems.
