BIOMAR
The project, led by Prof. Bruno Danis (ULB), aims to improve understanding of Antarctic marine ecosystems and how they respond to changes in ice shelf coverage. Sudden increases in biological activity have been observed in other regions following ice shelf collapse or calving events. To explore this rarely visited environment, underwater imagery was collected using a dropcam mounted on a lander built by an IPF crew member. Traditional sampling methods, including baited traps and nets, were also used to assess marine biodiversity. CTD measurements were performed along the edge of the Roi Baudouin Ice Shelf to characterize the underwater environment and the properties of the newly formed bay.
