CLIMB
CLIMB is an atmospheric research project that investigates how aerosols, clouds and precipitation interact and influence the surface mass balance of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Led by a consortium of Belgian research institutions, the project combines meteorological observations with atmospheric measurements to improve our understanding of the processes that control snowfall, cloud formation and climate in Antarctica.
The project operates a network of instruments at Princess Elisabeth Antarctica and surrounding field sites to continuously monitor atmospheric conditions. Measurements include temperature, humidity and air pressure at different elevations, as well as observations of aerosols, clouds, precipitation, atmospheric trace gases, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ozone and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Together, these datasets provide a comprehensive picture of the Antarctic atmosphere from the surface to cloud level.
By combining these long-term observations, CLIMB helps researchers better understand the role of aerosols in cloud formation, precipitation and the Antarctic water cycle. The data also support the development of more accurate weather forecasts and climate models, improving predictions of how the Antarctic Ice Sheet may respond to a changing climate.
