Led by Prof. Frank Pattyn and Prof. Jean-Louis Tison (ULB), the MASS2ANT project aims to improve the understanding of ice mass balance changes in East Antarctica and their contribution to future sea-level rise. The project focuses on the King Baudouin Ice Shelf and surrounding ice rises, where scientists collect shallow ice cores and perform ice-penetrating radar measurements combined with satellite observations. The extracted ice cores provide information on changes in ice mass balance over the last centuries. During the field campaigns, the team successfully drilled ice cores, including a 260-metre-deep ice core, which will be analysed at ULB to reconstruct past variations in the region’s surface mass balance.
